Tanzania Parks Overview + Great Migration Guidance
Tanzania Safari Highlights
Tanzania is one of the world’s most iconic safari destinations, not just for the Serengeti, but for the variety of landscapes and wildlife experiences you can combine in a single itinerary. Whether you’re planning a first safari, a family trip, or a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife journey, we’ll match the best parks to your travel dates, budget, and travel style.
Planning tip:
Your best itinerary depends on three things:
- Your travel dates (seasonality affects wildlife movement and road conditions)
- Your priorities (big cats, elephants, scenery, photography, romance, family pace)
- Your pace (do you want to move often, or spend longer in fewer places?)
Serengeti National Park
Best for: Big cats, wide open plains, classic safari atmosphere, Great Migration (season-dependent)
The Serengeti is the heartbeat of Tanzania safari. It’s famous for endless plains, big predator sightings, and that cinematic “Africa” feeling, especially at sunrise and sunset. It’s also the key ecosystem linked to the Great Migration, which means the experience can change depending on the time of year.
What guests love most about the Serengeti:
- Classic big-sky landscapes and huge wildlife density
- Strong chance of predator sightings (lions, cheetahs, leopards)
- Incredible photography opportunities and dramatic light
How we plan Serengeti time:
We tailor your Serengeti routing to your dates and movement patterns, so you’re not just “in the Serengeti”, you’re in the right area at the right time.
The Great Migration (Serengeti guidance)
If you’re searching for the “Great Migration”, you’re not alone. It’s one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles. But the most important thing to know is this:
The Migration is not a one-day event in one location. It’s a moving wildlife system influenced by rainfall and grazing. That means timing and routing matter.
What we do:
When you share your travel dates, we’ll advise:
- Which Serengeti region fits your timing best
- How many days you should spend there
- How to combine it with Ngorongoro/Tarangire for a balanced itinerary

Ngorongoro Conservation Area (Ngorongoro Crater)
Best for:
Dramatic scenery, dense wildlife viewing, “wow factor” in a short time
Ngorongoro is one of Tanzania’s most unforgettable landscapes, a vast volcanic caldera with rich wildlife viewing. Many guests describe it as one of the most intense safari days (in the best way), because wildlife density is often high.
What it’s known for:
- Incredible crater scenery and a unique ecosystem
- Excellent game viewing in a single day
- A powerful add-on to a Serengeti itinerary
How we use it in itineraries:
Ngorongoro works beautifully as a “highlight day” paired with Serengeti and Tarangire, especially if you want variety in landscapes and sightings
Tarangire National Park
Best for: Elephants, baobab landscapes, quieter park feel, big herds in season
Tarangire is a favourite for travellers who love elephants and classic African scenery, especially the baobab trees and open savannah woodland. It often feels less busy than some other parks, and it pairs naturally with Ngorongoro.
What guests love about Tarangire:
- Elephant encounters and large herd dynamics
- Beautiful landscapes and strong photography
- A slightly more “relaxed” safari rhythm
Lake Manyara National Park (Optional add-on)
Best for:
A varied “day safari”, birdlife, greenery, and adding diversity to an itinerary
Lake Manyara is a great add-on for travellers who want to break up longer drives and add a different landscape, forest, lake edge, and open areas in one park. It’s often used as a shorter safari day, depending on the itinerary flow.
How we build the right Tanzania safari for you

Practical Safari Info (Health, Luggage, Tipping, Safety)
Health & Vaccines (Important)
You should consult your doctor about what vaccinations are required for travel to the region and check whether they recommend the use of malaria prophylactics.
Please note that a yellow fever certificate is required by the authorities in Tanzania if your international flight has routed through Kenya, Ethiopia, Dubai and a number of other countries. Please check this with us so that we can provide advice depending on your airline..
Luggage Rules (Especially for internal flights)
Please note that internal flights within Tanzania (for example, to and from the Serengeti and Zanzibar) often have a strict luggage allowance of 15kg per person, including hand luggage. They also stipulate that your bag should be soft-sided (not rigid), as luggage space on smaller aircraft is limited.
Our recommendation:
Use a soft duffel bag and pack light. This reduces the risk of delayed luggage and makes transfers easier.
Tipping (Guidelines)
Tipping is a meaningful part of tourism in Tanzania, where wages are often supplemented by tips. Tipping is always discretionary; if service has been excellent, guests often choose to tip more.
General guideline ranges (best in USD or local currency):
- Concierges: $5 (check-in / check-out)
- Drivers / Guides: $30–$35 per day
- Housekeeping: $2–$5 per day
- Waiters: if you’re purchasing drinks, a ~10% tip is customary
Safari Safety (Read this)
Tanzania is generally a very safe country to travel in. There can be petty theft in major cities (and in Zanzibar), typically targeting travellers displaying valuables. Use common sense (avoid flashing expensive items, and avoid walking alone late at night).
On safari, please follow these rules:
- Never get out of your vehicle during game drives (even if the vehicle stops or you need the toilet).
- If you need a toilet stop, tell your driver early, and they’ll find an appropriate safe place.
- Do not wave anything outside the vehicle or stick your arms out.
- Always follow the guide’s instructions, especially on walking or canoeing activities.
- In tented camps: do not leave your tent after dark without staff/ranger escort.
- Wear closed shoes and socks when walking around camp/bush areas.
This isn’t about being strict, it’s about keeping guests safe and respecting wildlife.

Your tour includes drinking water whilst out on safari. Additional water and drinks can be purchased at your hotel.
